I’m dropping in here to notify you of some rate changes going forward in the costs of my services.
I haven’t updated the rates that I charge since December 2021, and with the economy rapidly changing the way it is, I’ve been very hesitant to make dramatic changes, because while I need the money on my end, I don’t want you wonderful clients of mine to feel like I’m gouging you or to make my services unaffordable for you, either.
However, unfortunately, I’m in a position where I have to make some adjustments to the costs of my services.
First, current clients: any projects you have scheduled with me right now or that you schedule with me before July 31, 2023, will be charged the current rates, which are as follows:
Developmental Editing: $0.03/word
Line Editing: $0.011/word
Copyediting: $0.008/word
Proofreading: $0.005/word
After July 31, 2023, the new rates as described below will be kicking in.
For new clients, starting on June 12, 2023, the rates will be as follows:
Developmental Editing: $0.05/word
Line Editing: $0.03/word
Copy Editing: $0.01/word
Proofreading: $0.007/word
These will also be the rates for existing clients beginning August 1, 2023.
I was really hesitant to raise these rates, to be honest, but it’s being done because of a combination of factors:
First, my living situation. My rates in December 2021 were perfect for my living situation at the time—I’m fortunate to live in a LCOL area, so my expenses generally stayed down. But my living situation has changed since December 2021, and as such, everything is more expensive.
Second, the obvious problem we’re all dealing with and that needs no further elaboration: inflation.
Third, and the reason I was somewhat forced to overcome my hesitancy to raise my rates: I learned a few days ago that even with my rate increase in December 2021, I am still dramatically under the standard rates that most editors charge for their work. Even with this rate increase, I’m still keeping the rates under the standard according to the Editorial Freelancers Association. (For example, for copyediting, their suggested charge is double what I’ve listed for my new rates!) I’ve tried to keep the rate increase to the absolute minimum so it’s not such a blindsiding for my clients, who I genuinely enjoy doing work for.
I’d also like to take a moment to remind everyone that I do have monthly payment plans available, so you can spread the cost of your project out in as little as three monthly payments or as many as twelve monthly payments (depending on how much your project’s total cost is). You can find out more details on the monthly payment plans and how they work here.
If you have any questions or concerns about the plan going forward regarding the pricing of my services, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email or via the contact form here on my website, and I’ll get back to you ASAP!
